Bergen County Bankruptcy Lawyer
Serving Passaic County and Bergen County
At The Law Offices of Susan S. Long, our Bergen County bankruptcy attorney works with people across New Jersey who are facing hard times and difficult decisions. There is a stigma surrounding debt relief options, as if applying for financial protection means you have somehow failed. With a law firm that is devoted to bankruptcy practice, we can tell you that this is completely untrue.
We represent hardworking people who have hit some bumps in the road and now find themselves with seemingly impossible options. We can help provide a fresh start to people facing financial difficulties. We have dedicated our practice to helping people through this process.
The Basics of Consumer Bankruptcy
There are generally two types of consumer bankruptcy available to the average individual:
Your personal bankruptcy eligibility is determined by your median income. Chapter 7 bankruptcy provides for a complete discharge of debt, while Chapter 13 is a debt reorganization program, which may provide for a partial, if not entire, discharge of your debt.
Under Chapter 7, there is a higher chance of property loss. However, there are guidelines in place that may allow you to keep much, if not all, of your belongings. These guidelines are called exemptions. For those individuals who do not qualify for Chapter 7 or who wish to retain nonexempt assets, filing for Chapter 13 will create a court-approved repayment plan that will last for three to five years.
There are certain debts that cannot be offset or modified, including child support, spousal maintenance, student loans and certain tax obligations. A knowledgeable attorney can let you know what debts are and are not dischargeable.

Working With You From Beginning to End
We personally work with our clients from the moment they pick up the phone to the court’s entry of discharge. During the free initial phone consultation, we will go through an overview of your financial situation and describe the process that lies ahead. At our first client meeting, we will discuss your assets, liabilities and income. This will determine your potential lines of action and their outcomes. Finally, we will assess what you can do to get past your bankruptcy as soon as possible so that you may move forward with your life.
